Ten poems about loss, leaving, and what’s still worth saving. Each one comes with the handwritten edits that shaped it.
I wrote these poems between the late 1990’s and early 2000’s. Years later I went back with a pen. I crossed out what wasn’t true enough, wrote in what was, drew arrows, moved lines, and renamed things.
Memorials keeps both versions. Each poem is printed the way the pen decided it should read. After it comes a “From the margin” page: the actual lines from the typescript, ink and all, so you can see what changed. All ten original pages are at the back, exactly as they were.
The poems are in three sections. Those Taken is for the people we lost. Those Let Go is for the loves we had to walk away from to keep living. Those Still Here is for the bonds that might still be repaired.
It’s a poetry collection, and it’s also a look at how writing, and a writer, changes over time.
